Baby size

Postby Proudmama » Aug 14, 2005 6:22 am

I am not sure if this has been done before but I am just curious. I have read some articles on HG stating smaller babies are more common. In my case, my son was 9 lbs 6 oz and born vaginally  .

Hi,

Based on what I have seen from the women on this site, as long as you carry to full term (37+ weeks), babies are average to above average size. Those that deliver early, of course tend to have smaller babies, but this is true across the board for all women.

If your HG is being treated properly, then your baby should be of average size.

My DD was 7 lb 3 ounces. She was bigger than both my DH and I were at birth... he was 6 lbd 5 oz, I was 6 lbs 13 oz. :) I am guessing this baby will probably end up in the same ballpark!

Interesting poll... looking forward to seeing the results!

Not sure how this one will do size-wise but my first two were HG babies and they weighed in at 7lb10oz and 7lb11oz. Both born within days of their due date so full-term. Not too big but not too small either considering I lost so much weight with HG that I weighed the same on delivery day as I did prepregnancy!

My babies were both small, but I think it was more genetics than HG... although neither DH or I are particularly small :? . But they've both been healthy with no "failure to thrive" diagnoses.

Girl born 9/15/03 (8 days late)- 5 lbs. 13 oz.

Boy born 7/16/05 (one day early)- 6 lbs. 3 oz.

It only let me put in one baby size, so I'll list them both here.

The first DD, I was on no meds at all except my normal IV's. She was a healthy 8 4oz. baby. No growth problems, but stays in the lower percential of weight, which comes from family genes w/ young girls.

Second DD I was self medicating, and she was 8 6oz. She's a big girl now who looks closer to three then a barely 2. (different father, and boy can you tell! I have one dark child, brown hair, dark hazel eyes, tans to a dark brown, and slight like a little dark sprite. The other is very light celtic skin, blond hair, blue eyes, and built like an angel churrub. One is french and the other is scottish. What a trip!)

This one...my gut says to add a few oz.
The only thing worth stealing is a kiss from a sleeping child.

Kimi was 9lb 8oz so definitely not small!! I was 8lb something and DP was 7lb something, Kimi is the biggest baby in both of our families so far, and also the first HG baby.

Michael was 7 lbs 2 oz-- a bit smaller than both me (around 8 lbs) and DH (almost 9 lbs) were. I had bought all 3-month sizes because I figured the "newborn" stuff wouldn't fit--we were expecting a much bigger baby! We did end up going out after he was born to get some newborn size snap-suits and stretchies, but Michael wore alot of long-sleeve onesies with the sleeves rolled up!

Not to sure what to expect for this baby..."everyone" says the second baby is bigger than the first...but then, "everyone" also said Michael would be bigger than I was at birth, and they were wrong about that!

I voted back when this thread was started but since I've now had #3 I'll add her info.

Em was a little over two weeks early and weighed 5 lb 12 oz. Even though she was small starting out she is now in the 90 percentile for both length and weight.

Just wanted to note that statisticians would be pleased--our answers are a perfect "bell curve" with most of the babies coming in in the "average" range of 7 to 8 pounds :)

So I guess this means that as long as they're carried to term, most HG babies aren't low birthweight at all (and in some of your cases, even the "early" ones weren't!)

Paulie was 6 lbs 5 oz, and he was born at 37 weeks 5 days. so he was relatively small, but not tiny. I don't attribute that to the HG though. Between me, two sisters, my mother and maternal grandmother there have been a total of 22 babies born. All of those babies were under 7 pounds, and Paulie is the only HG baby.

William was born at 37.5 weeks and weighed 5 lbs. 7oz. I gained 7 pounds past my pre-pregnancy weight (after losing and gaining), so didn't expect a huge baby, but was surprised he was under 6. Thankfully, he was a healthy little peanut. A year later, he's 21 pounds and in the 15% for weight.

Naomi was small but mighty- full term, 5 pounds, 7 ounces. Weather it was the HG or genetics, we're not sure (my mother and uncle were both born under 6 pounds, and my grandmother had normal pregnancies).

Brittany was 5lbs 14 oz, 19 1/2 inches long.

Scotty was 3 weeks early (they induced as soon as they thought he could handle it due to me being so sick.) 6lbs 9oz, 19 1/2 inches long.
