Postby Atsie » Oct 19, 2007 9:49 am

From start to finish or current what is the cost of your pg paid by you and insurance?

I think it was just under $150,000 in medical bills. I had very little out of pocket expenses, maybe a couple of thousand in extra childcare and loss of work. But, my insurance paid a huge price for HG.

My last HG pregnancy cost my insurance over 150,000 USD. Our co-pays were about $3000 USD. If you factor in the loss of my income and some of DH's overtime, add it cost us another 35,000 USD. And, if you wanted to get techical, we had to have childcare for my older DD, which was my Mom... if we would of had to pay for that.. ugghh....

HG is so unfair!

I actually haven't had a chance to add up the costs yet, partly because they are still going up. But my MIL calls this the million-dollar baby and my DH says the baby already owes him at least $400, and the baby isn't even here yet.

I wish I knew what the cost was...for my first 2 pregnancies we were in the military and have no idea how much it cost. Prescriptions were free. The only thing we payed for was $5 a day for a hospital room all the times I was admitted.

This time I have paid $500 in ER copays, $150 in ultrasounds, Urgent care visits, $100 in prescription medicines, $105 in doctor copays. We paid 1,440 for a nanny during my worst weeks.

Now we have met our deductable and I'm not supposed to pay any more except for 10 percent of whatever the total cost is. I have NO idea of how much that will be! I am nervous about how much we will have to pay.

I won't be happy to see the bill that's for sure!

I have no idea what mine cost because we had state insurance with both kids. Everything was covered 100% and we never even saw a bill (I was sooo greatful for this when John was in and out of the hospital so much too.) I truly dread the next pregnancy and having to pay for it.

I have no idea what our insurance company had to pay but I'm sure it was a huge bill considering 12 weeks of Home Health Care, multiple ER visits and nearly an entire pregnancy of Zofran in one form or another.

Our medical out of pocket was probably about $10,000 - $15,000 when you include deductables, co-pays and OTC meds.

Other costs were of great problems to our family - I lost my job and wasn't able to work at all, dh's job in 100% commission and since he was busy keeping me alive his income dropped to almost nothing. Our food bill and personal care costs went up huge amounts when I wasn't able to shop or cook. I had to have other people shop for clothing for the kids so I wasn't able to save money like I usually do on those things. We got so far behind on bills that late fees and interest rate increases are still eating us alive.

I don't know what it cost and Em is worth the price but it was a big price to pay.

I added up the bills from my pg and Aaron's NICU stay - it came to approximately $750,000. The insurance company did pay that much due to their negotiated rates, but that's what they were billed.

Add in lost income for me and my husband (who stayed home and took care of me the whole time), my lost job, and over 4 years of digging my career out of the toilet, well, Aaron is my million dollar baby that's for sure.

I was in govt. healthcare Norway, so health care costs were almost nothing. I only had to pay about 300 USD in deductible costs, and then there were no other costs at all.
I was on disability for part of the time, and wanted to get a job while pg to up my maternity leave benefits, but bec. of HG I couldn't do that. So I lost a lot financially bec. of HG. It could have been worse though, and I'm happy we were here during the pg. We were going to move back to NYC but stayed for the health care.
So Aidan was a fairly inexpensive baby, as priceless as he is!

My pregnancy + the twins' 18 day NICU stay (and keep in mind the whole second half of the pg was zofran-fluffy) was over $300,000 (purely medical bills, no other factors included). Our out of pocket was $2500 for family per year, but it was during 2006 and 2007 so we got hit with it twice. I'm still getting bills from 2006... The nice thing is that almost everything had been free for the twins since they left the NICU (except copays).

I remember when Aimee first told us years ago how much her pg cost. It blew me away. When I tell people how much mine cost and they're shocked, I always say if you think that's a lot, I know a girl with a million dollar baby!

Our medical out of pocket on this pg should be around $2000. Personally, I think I am getting a deal! My first pg cost us about 10K, and my second (gotta love MCARE) only cost the co-pay on the Rx, so maybe $200. What they cost the insurance companies...25k+ for the first and 50K+++ for the second--I think. I never even saw the bills with MCARE, but I know that each of my 10-15 hospital visits started at 800 and that the zofran was 1500/month for 6 months, plus IV's and dr's visits and bi-monthly u/s and the OB and delivery....But I am not really sure.

Now all the other costs of the pg's, yikes, I don't even want to know.

but it was during 2006 and 2007 so we got hit with it twice

This is exactly why I'm waiting till January to get pregnant. No way I'm paying deductible and out of pocket max twice.

I know this is one of the reasons why JennyK waited until Jan. My original plan would've worked that way too, but it took a lot longer than I thought it would to get pg...

Will cost my insurance company over $300,000. We paid about $2500 - $3000 out-of-pocket. I am not sure how much Annie cost. Just a guess would be $80,000 for my insurance and $5000 for us. (Pregnancy mostly in 2003, birth in 2004.)

Angela, it is not a coincidence my second baby was due in September. My pregnancy with him was carefully planned to be contained within one calendar/insurance year. I got lucky and the timing happened as planned. I conceived in December, found out I was pg in early January, and the first day I was truly sick was January 23. I remember b/c Jan 23 is A's birthday.

Yeah all of my poor kids are going to end up with birthdays at the same time. Bella and John actually had the same due date. I just really hate having them at the start of flu/RSV.

I know Zofran cost alone was 50,000. I think delivery was about that. I know we had personal expense with housekeeper and food issues for about 10k we took on personally.

Im not exactly sure how much much but with my daughter, we had AMAZING insurance!! And only paid about $200-$300. But with my son, we didnt have ANY insurance, his work didnt offer it at all.. And I was in and out of the hospital for the first 3 months of my pregnancy and it added up to about $200,000. We have insurance now, so hopefully the insurance is going to pay all of it next time!

Joni, did Medicaid cover your second pregnancy? Holy smoke, with $200k of debt in medical bills I'd have to file for bankruptcy.
