a summary of successful fluids

Hoping to help folks new to hg and those who are in it again, I decided to summarize the fluids most likely to stay down.

1. Everyone's favorite: the good old IV at the ER. Always stays down and usually doesn't leave an after taste.
2. Ice chips...'nough said there.
3. Slurpees, Slushies, Mr. Misties, Icees, frozen Coke.
4. Ice cold Koolaid. Even better when served as shaven ice.
From what I can see, the more food coloring the more an hger is likely to tolerate it. Anyone else notice this?
5. Sprite. Not 7up or others. Sprite.
6. Any manner of flavored, usually a citrus is best, fizzy water. Yes, carbonated. Weird, eh?
7. Orange juice...ice cold...maybe shaved ice form or popsicles.

The best thing I drank during my last pg was a slushee made with real strawberries...the sugary canned frozen kind.

Good luck out there.

I love orange juice but when I was pregnant it did NOT sit well in my stomach. I basically had to stop drinking it until well into my 2nd trimester. But I craved and drank tons of lemonade and it went down great. (?) Both citrus drinks so who knows why one worked and the other didn't.

Also, cold drinks didn't work well for me. I preferred room temperature.

I think it's important to find something that works for you. It seems like it's different for everyone. Just keep trying different things til you find something that stays down. Good luck staying hydrated!

adding to the list

adding limeade to the list.

Dairy Queen Fresh Lime Slushie, basically a limeade slush. This is a special request item, so make sure you ask for fresh lime (not the sugar concentrate). Okay, I have been living off these for a month... literally the only liquid to stay down. I think the combination of lime and ice does the trick.

I would also like to add water with lemon slices. However this did'nt work till late second tri-current. This besides decaf iced tea are the only drinks I can tolerate.

I'd add cold Gatorade, especially Mango Madness ( I think that was the name). Last pregnancy I could tolerate chamomile tea. This time, with heartburn, nothing but water for me, alas.

Ok, I am SO glad to finally be able to put something on this list!!! :-) At 10 weeks (today) I can keep down:
IV's ... duh, that's a no brainer!
PEPSI ... nurse just told me today that for some reason, coke syrup (hate coke, so tried pepsi) and the bubbles helped calm the stomach... weird, but it's working so far.
BANANA PUDDING... I know, sounds crazy, but I can eat the artificial "Handy Snacks" kind.. NOT the banana cream pie style, plain pudding. mmmm!
WATERMELON ... stays down for a couple of hours anyway, and doc said anything over 1/2 hour is totally great. :-)

Hopefully I'm on my way out of the HG hell.

Vitamin Water

"Vitamin Water" brand water. It tastes just like flavored water or juice, but it has FOLIC ACID! ELECTROLYTES! and other goodies infused in the water. Won't make you sick like pill vitamins. Found these at the regular grocery store. The best flavor is called "Essential" which is just a mild orange flavor.

Really Cold, watered down Tang. Normally, I loathe this stuff.

Really Cold, watered down grape juice. The Welchs frozen concentrated stuff.

The light purple gatorade (I think maybe Riptide Rush or soemthing like that) made into a slushie with ice in the blender was one of the only things I could get down last time I was pg.

Sometimes even that tasted way too acidic for me and on those days I had some mild success (it is all relative) with a slushie made of skim milk, vanilla extract, ice,and a tiny bit of sugar.

I recently had some Santa Cruz Organic sparkling apple juice (while not pg) and it struck me that it would be a good option for HG, but that is pure speculation.

I just figured out that lemonade made with fresh squeezed lemons stays down hot or ice cold. :D

I have been able to drink oolong tea. Black tea and green tea were okay for a while, but that did not last very long. For a few weeks Caffeine Free Diet Pepsi was what I tolerated best, but that changed last week.
It seems that once I puke up a stomach full of the same liquid twice in a couple days, that is end of being able to drink it. It may be mental, but the aversion is strong enough to make me steer clear of it. I am hoping that the oolong tea will be okay for a long time, though.

Caffeine worked for me too.

Here's a third trimester idea that worked a couple times....and I know we wouldn't hear it from a normal, but I'll share it since it helped a couple days: peppermint tea. *Suzanne ducks from the saltines flying her way.*

Those first few weeks when HG was really bad (back when I was on Reaglan) all I could drink was Sprite or any other clear soda. It wouldn't all stay down but the little that did helped. Also, those flavored waters from Wal-Mart, I liked the kiwi strawberry one. The drink that I can never drink again is Gatorade. I used to like it before I had HG but since I tried it while having HG and getting very sick, I can't even look at it.

Ok, I just today hit the famous "I CANNOT get any more water down!" stage. Since my sweetheart of a doc says that I have to get a PICC line if I can't keep a liter of the stuff down a day, I'm in trouble. SO... does the Dasani "natural strawberry flavored water beverage" count as water??? It is the only thing that's working for me today! Has a little fizz in it, but says NOT carbonated. Also... sweetened with Splenda. Help!! Anybody know if this counts, or should I keep looking for "real" water that will stay down?

Kari, that should count. Pretty much the only thing I could keep down was coke and even that worked. The Dasani flavored waters worked for me for a while too.
