I need help (from rjcharris)

Postby MamaLily » Aug 02, 2004 4:16 pm

This message was posted by "rjcharris" in a different folder, but I'm moving it here so that everyone can see it and offer ideas/support.

My daughter has HG. She is 11 weeks pregnant and has lost 26 lbs. She has been in the hospital for hydration 5 times and now is in the hospital as an inpatient. She has been in for 5 days now. She has not had solid food of any kind in 10 days. She has just seen on call doctors, because her doctor did not start till today. He came in and has ordered no visitors, no phone calls and little help from the nurses. He thinks she is doing this for the attention. I left her crying and begging to go home. Her veins are about non exsistent now and they are going to go in under her collar bone to start another IV. I don't know what to do and her husband is beside himself. She has a 3 year old daughter that is also suffering from all this stress. Am I being overly panicked? Somebody help me.

The sub-clavian line may be a good thing if her veins are not handling the IVs, but she obviously should be rehydrated after a 5-day course, so that means they have to step up the meds! What is she on as far as medications go? Have any of the on-call doctors been more sympathetic, or is there another option? It's difficult for a new doctor to clearly assess the situation and absolutely unfair to attribute HG to psychosis. Family has every right to stay with her as long as she's willing; there has got to be SOMEONE in that hospital who will listen to reason! Please keep us updated.

Please help her

Postby kmwilson » Aug 02, 2004 10:31 pm

Please, please, please fight this. This doctor has absolutely no right to say its in her head.

With my first pregnancy, I was in the hospital still throwing up whether it was oral medicine or medicine in IV. I still threw up everything. My doctor was calling in other specialists to check other parts of my body to see if anything was causing it from other area.

We didn't know about Zofran until a gastro doctor suggested it. He had checked my body for bacteria in that avenue.

We were to the point my doctor was fearful for my life or that my body would attack the baby in defense to fight for what nutrition might stay down. I know nothing about your doctors case but that kind of attitude won't help her any.

HG began at 6-8 wks; Zofran from 12 wks until around 25-26 wks. Despite HG, I loved the miracle of birth.

You sound like my mother when I had HG for the first time. My parents and my husband were scared and didn't think the doctors were doing all they could do yet we were scared to change medical treatment with me being so sick! I wish we would have fought harder. They also treated me like it was in my head. They had never seen anyone so sick.
In the first trimester, I lost 19% of my body weight (well over 20 pounds) and was more sick than words can describe. I still look back and wonder how I survived it all. They would just stick me in the hospital and run IV's (sometimes it would take 8 sites to get an IV started). My veins were shot!!! They even went to the foot!
I am so sorry for all you have been through! I would tell your doctor about this site and all of the women who have suffered from the same thing! If he is at all a competent doctor, he will at least try to validate your findings.
I hope things improve for you all!

Please find your daughter a new doctor--one who understands HG. Any doctor who says HG is in a person's head is not fit to be treating your daughter at this time and if he continues to treat her and share his "views" on her condition she will have a more difficult path with this pregnancy and may not be able to deal with the after-effects of having this condition.

I suffered with HG throughout my pregnancy. The most difficult aspect of the condition for me was not the physical trauma, but dealing with acquaintences, family, friends, employers, etc. who believed what I had been through was "in my head." I am still dealing with those issues to this day.

More than anything your daughter needs your support. I know HG is shocking to the victim's family and spouse, but the very best thing you can do is support your daughter 100% and NEVER allow anyone to make her feel what she is going through is in her head--especially her doctor.

Good luck to you. I wish your family the very best in dealing with HG. Believe it or not, things will only get better and soon you will be holding that precious grandbaby in your arms. Make sure your daughter realizes how grateful you are for all she will go through for her baby. As my doctor once told me, hyperemesis pregnancies produce the most wonderful, beautiful babies! She was right.
