? Partial Hysterectomy

Postby danimomof2girls » Aug 01, 2004 8:09 am

Hi Everyone,
I'm 26 and an HG survivor twice over. I have adenomyosis of the uterus and will undergo a partial hysterectomy September 1st. Does anyone else have an experience that they could share? I'm a bit nervous and sad. Although I know that we were not going to have any more children, it feels empty to know that my uterus will be gone. I've had pain since Julia's birth though and will be glad for that aspect to be taken care of. Am I too overemotional about this or what?
Any comments you have would be most helpful right now.
Thanks!
Danielle

I personally have not had a hysterectomy, but both my mother and my sister have. They both had partial hysterectomies due to medical problems. My mother was in her forties so it wasn't such a hard decision, my sister was only 31 when she had hers. She had a hard time making the decision, but she is glad she did. No more monthly periods. Her and I both have always had extremely painful monthlies. I have actually been trying to convince my doc to do one on me as soon as possible. He has suggested it before but we weren't done having kids. Now, in October when this one is finally here, we will be back to the discussion of, how soon can we do it? I am only 31, but I am more than ready to have it out. I also have a good friend who had one done about 4 years ago. All three say they would never go back and reverse their decision.

Only you can make the decision, but I wanted to give you a couple of positive examples of women who have had it done. They are all VERY happy with the results.
Wendy,

Thanks so much for the input Wendy. I know inside it's the right thing to do. I just have felt like a woman lately. It's hard to not even be able to be intimate with your husband without it hurting so badly and I have to be careful the way I hold the girls. After getting through my two horrible pregnancies, I thought any medical issues would be in the past but I've seen series of doctors! I have always had terrible monthlies as well and had a D & C last year but it didn't help. I do appreciate the positive input through because I still have fear in the back of my mind about how I will feel after the procedure. Hopefully much better!!!
Thanks again!
Danielle

Sorry to hear about your health problems, Danielle. Personally, I'd have no qualms about having the surgery, but that's an individual response. Heck, I begged my doctor to rip it all out after my 4th and final HG! lol I do hope you get good response that helps you come to terms with the surgery and its aftermath. 26 is awfully young, but after 2 bouts with HG, you know the incredible strength of your body. I wish you all the best; you'll be in my thoughts and prayers.

Thanks Pamela,
I'm the type of person who likes to be well-informed (being a pre-nursing student probably doesn't help that :D ). I suppose that after going through HG twice, I'm tired of seeing doctors and specialists. I suppose I'm not used to having medical issues unless I'm pregnant...ha ha. Anyway, the thought of not having a period is nice and I am eternally thankful that I have a condition that can be fixed. As a woman, it does feel strange and I suppose we all yearn for a little support from other women since our husbands honestly cannot understand our bodies the way we do.
Thanks for the warm thoughts! I'll try not to rub it into you when I'm uterus free you guys

my parts don't work, so why keep em?

Hi All,

With the partial (and I was lmao with the "rip it all out" comment Pamela..have begged the same), will there be hormonal issues? I'm contemplating the surgery as well...to avoid hg again, to avoid postpartum mood disorders again, to avoid a miscarriage again, because I'm too ancient to try the above again, and to stop the blasted bleeding that has been going on for THREE months. My uterus is so on top of its job that I can't even miscarry right  shocking, pathetic, and true :? So will I have hormonal complications similar to postpartum mood disorders?

Really would like to have sex again one day and beginning to think surgery is the only chance of it.

Hi Suzanne,
With a partial hysterectomy, you will still have hormonal function because your ovaries are still there. My uterus will be removed which is the primary reason I am having so much discomfort during intercourse and normal activities. I also had my period one month 40 days apart and then started 2 weeks later. I went running with my cousins at a beach vacation and started having pain around the 3rd mile. When I got back to the beach house I had started bleeding. I went through a 40 pack of Super-Plus Tampons over the next 6 days. Usually my period lasts around 8-11 days long with heavy bleeding. I always have pain in the same place every time (lower left quadrant) and as you can tell, it has invaded every sector of my life.
I'll have surgery on September 1st and although I dread having to go through another medical procedure (thanks HG!) I think that this will drastically improve my quality of life and relationship with my husband. He has been so understanding and supportive but I there is always an unspoken strain when you can't fully be with each other. Poor guy, first HG twice and now this!!!
Has anyone else been experiencing similar symptoms?
Danielle
