Severe heartburn

Postby JacobsMommy31 » Jun 16, 2012 3:38 pm

Hi everyone. I am new to the forums and currently 10 weeks 6 days pregnant. I am taking zofran 32mg/day, unisom/b6 3x a day, and Zantac 2x a day. My issue is I'm having severe heartburn still which of course is aggravating my HG. The Zantac is just not cutting it. I am sitting here now and it feels like someone is shoving knives down my esophagus! Please help! I can't wait until Monday to call my ob/gyn because it hurts so so bad.

Hi,
I was on Omeprazole 20 mg/twice a day. It supposed to be stronger than Zantac. I don't know if it really helped but you can give it a try!

Zantac is a good acid reducer. It is one of the H2 blockers. A stronger type of acid reducer is a PPI. Some of the PPIs are: protonix, aciphex, nexium, prilosec, and prevacid. Some of us need to take both types of acid reducers to get enough control. You can start by taking the max dose of Zantac (300 mg twice daily), or switch to one of the PPIs, but if neither is fully effective, it's also OK to take both.

And 300 mg Zantac/day is the standard dose, but far from the max dose. I took 60mgs of Pepcid/day which is about the equivalent of 450/day of Zantac, could of gone up from there, but adding Nexium worked well when even that stopped working.
