Is anyone a vegetarian/vegan and got HG?

Postby faithlove » Apr 11, 2012 12:45 am

I have always been a junkfood junkie up until our second daughters birth, and we have been treating our ailments nutritionally since then and eating increasingly healthy. I am thinking of trying the Hallelujah Diet (life change, not really a diet) to see how it affects our next pregnancy (God-willing!) It is basically a plant based diet, and I have researched the protein issues that I thought would arise, but they seem to be easily solvable with nuts and oils and sea based foods. Has anyone ever been on an entirely vegan or even vegetarian diet and HG? I am starting to really believe that all or almost all disease is preventable and most are treatable with proper nutrition.
Loss at 16 wks in Oct 2012. Now pregnant again! :)

Interesting idea about nutrition. I believe a lot of my son's issues are food-related, so I am focusing a lot on his nutrition (and my family's as a result). I was not vegan or vegetarian before HG, but I have had moments in my life where I just do not like the idea of meat in general and cannot eat it for whatever reason. When going vegan or vegetarian, you do need to make sure you get enough protein in other ways, especially with your history of hypoglycemia (I deal with that sometimes as well). If your body does not have enough protein, it cannot deal with the carbs and sugars in the way it normally does (not saying that is the right way). On the other hand, I have considered doing some detox or "clean out" plans to make sure my body is in better working order for when/if I do get pg again. I know that I should avoid some of those, but some don't sound too bad for short periods of time (only a week or so at a time).

Prior to my pregnancy and HG, I was vegan, gluten/wheat-free, bean and soy-free, and I still got HG. Oddly enough, I am eating all things (except fish and red meat) during the pregnancy because I want to eat whatever I can keep down. I don't eat meat (chicken or turkey at this point) very much because I don't really like it, but I try to include it when I think it might go down okay so I have some protein in my system. My main protein intake was dark leafy greens, nuts, and hemp seeds pre-pregnancy and those were intolerable to me in the beginning with my HG.
I also thought I'd be able to keep green smoothies down, but to no avail. I have only been able to keep them down now in my 2nd trimester.

I'm hoping that I will be able to have a less traumatic experience with the next pregnancy and even if I have HG again, I will know to start the Zofran earlier ( I waited until I was extremely dehydrated and had lost about 13 lbs before I went on Zofran) and create a better environment for myself and family.

I wasn't veggie but became one during pregnancy. Will be more interesting to see what happens this time as I definitely eat better than I did. :D
