Do I need to go in?

Postby Eskirk » May 03, 2012 6:00 pm

Hello all,

Im at 11 weeks and things seem to be getting pretty bad the last few days. I spent all day on one of those DRINKMENT little 80 cal cans of soda END DRINKMENT, took me all day. But I'm pretty sure I threw all of it up, I seem to start vomiting after a few sips then end up with bile. I.m too nauseous to move off my recliner today, i even used a bucket instead of going to the bathroom 10 feet away. My question is, when do I know I should go get fluids? Do I wait and see how tomorrow is? My zofran script seems to have failed me miserably, everytime I take it, I barf it up. I seem to have the same problem with the B6. So, when do you guys know it's time for fluids? This is much more intense than I have been experiencing, seems like I've been at least able to eat a little and can kind of hold the vomiting at bay for a little while. Not for the last few days though. Any help for a newbie to this would be really appreciated.
Bless you all

If you are dehydrated the zofran will not work, so I would go in and get fluids when you can. Also, have you tried Unisom or are you just taking the B6? Unisom really helps me a lot - I just take one at night.

I'd say yes - it's time to go in. If you're not getting fluids down, and vomiting everything up, you're probably dehydrated. This makes the nausea and vomiting worse, and makes it almost impossible to catch up on your own. If you go in to urgent care or your local ER, they can give you fluids and IV zofran. That might be enough to help you keep your meds down and start drinking better on your own. But if you keep having trouble with drinking, you may need to consider regular hydration - either through scheduled IVs at an infusion center or urgent care, or IV hydration at home with homecare. For now, you need to get in wherever you can. Today.

Go get relief now. You could be feeling better. I remember weeks 11-13 being the worst. Don't put it off thinking it'll get better. Just go feel better now. I say this because I'm so over hg already and I'm guessing you are too. Maybe you can get IV zofran too while you're at it. IV reglan worked better for me. You will get through this and we are here for you!

I agree with all the rest. If you're not keeping liquid down you are going to be dehydrated. It's much better to get the fluids earlier than be severely dehydrated where you really, really have to catch up.

Zofran always fails me when I've let myself get too dehydrated. I just throw it up, water up, saliva up and bile. It just doesn't work. You need fluids straight away. You'll feel better afterwards. X take care

I'm with everyone else - my general rule of thumb is if I get to the point where I'm asking myself 'do I need to go in' then I should already be in. Once you get dehydrated with HG, it's virtually impossible to rehydrate yourself without intervention as you're not keeping enough fluid down to even maintain hydration let alone catch up.

I was in the hospital for weeks 11-12 because of severe dehydration/malnutrition. I had a few days of just straight IV fluids and then my doctor decided I needed a PICC line with TPN. Since I got that I still get sick every day or so, but I am able to keep down more liquids and small amounts of food, plus I know I am getting all the hydration and nutrients that the baby and I need. If straight IV fluids aren't enough, ask your doc about a PICC line and home health care. It made a lot of difference to me! Hang in there sweetie! We're all here to support you!

I also have a PICC and get TPN, and am doing much better than I was. I don't feel like I'm on my death bed all day, although I still can't do anything. And I'm even able to hold down small amounts of food too.

Agree with the others: when I asked myself (and here) if it was time to go in, I should have been in already. I went 2 weeks once then 3 weeks another time without drinking more than 4 oz of juice during the day, and puking most of it up. The bile is the worst part, and I always ended with it. Someone else had a suggestion to quickly swallow a glass of water or something else that isn't terrible to throw up just before you do, because it is better than vomiting nothing or that awful bile.

Also, Zofran will not work at all if you are even close to being dehydrated. It also sounds like you are on a pill form, and not the dissolving form. I would DEFINITELY ask for the oral dissolving tablet. They also make B6 in a dissolvable tablet, but I had to drive a while to get it, and that wasn't an option when I was pg.

It is possible you need another med in the mix just to get over the worst. The combo that worked best for me was Zofran and Phenergan, but I also had a PICC. Phenergan was injected into the bag of fluid for me, while I took the ODT form of Zofran. That helped me stop spiraling down into bile and depression.

Good luck! Let us know how and what you do!
