Celebrity HG sufferers?

Postby phaerelastra » May 07, 2012 11:42 am

I was doing some research on if there are any celebrities that suffered with HG, maybe to help raise awareness on a larger scale. So far, other than Charlotte Bronte (and in this day and age, so few people know who she is), I can't find anyone. My husband suggests that maybe it has to do with the type of care received? Like, it has more to do with socioeconomic factors and less to do with a woman's propensity to have HG. For example, a movie star has access to the best doctors and medical care in the world, so symptoms of HG can be caught earlier and dealt with immediately, so it never escalates beyond NVP or something. My thought is that if someone really famous had HG, it would be all over the news as she "speaks out" about her disease.

We need that kind of attention, I think, but I believe my husband might be right. Myself, I'm rather low income until I finish my degree, so getting proper care wasn't as easy as I thought, because sometimes I had to beg for something as simple as hydration.

Thoughts?

Maria Shriver had hg, but doesn't really talk about it. I think there were some others as well. I think the problem is that celebrities tend to try and keep their private lives separate, and also may be trying to portray an image of perfection which would make them reluctant to talk about their health.

My only barrier to care was my reluctance to admit that I was sick. I has insurance that covered everything and even worked in the same office as my doctor. Low socioeconomic status has not been shown to be a risk when looking at prevalence of hg.

Gwenyth Paltrow could have had HG. She said she threw up everyday all 9 months of her pregnancies...

LaLa Vazquez, an MTV host and basketball players wife (Carmelo Anthony), had HG. She discusses it briefly in the article below and says she never wants to be pregnant again.

Thank you so much.... I am a huge Knicks fan and Carmelo is my guy (next to Tyson Chandler), so to relate to him and his woman was really nice for me. Thanks, ladies! I can see why Maria Shriver didn't talk about it, or Gwyneth either. I'm sometimes embarassed about my own experiences, so I totally relate.

A diabetic on insulin is still a diabetic. A woman with hyperemesis on medication who actually achieves symptom control still has hyperemesis. Either way, if you take the medication away, the disease returns!

Poor woman. I wonder if it will help raise awareness, though? I recently posted to my blog about mine, and my friends who read it immediately told me they said Kate has it and how they've really downplayed the severity of it. But at least my friends who never even heard of HG knew exactly what they meant - and knew the news was not telling the whole story! - when they saw it.

My mom just said they same thing, apparently it was on the View this morning and they basically said it was just morning sickness and not serious. Ugh.

i don't understand why the media is wanting to down play it when all they are about is making everything more dramatic. wouldn't her being sick with a life threatening illness make for better headlines than "morning sickness"?! i hope people can learn the truth...

thank goodness people are finally getting a little bit aware!
but really, you'd think that common sense would tell anybody that you don't go to the hospital for morning sickness. how many pregnant women do you know who went to the hospital for morning sickness?? that's just nonsense that anyone with a brain can see through.
just call me Mighty Mom. (mighty what i'm not gonna say.)
