hyperemesis and eczema

Postby Kalanit » Mar 05, 2012 6:32 am

I don't know if my first pregnancy was considered hyperemesis or not. I vomitted 7-8 times a day the entire pregnancy, but only had to get iv's 4 times and had early contractions from the dehydration once. Either way, I had no other complications besides what is listed above.
This pregnancy has been much worse with numerous hospitalizations and almost constant ivs. But in addition, about the same time I started vomitting, I started feeling itchy everywhere. To the point that I was bleeding from constantly scratching myself. Especially in folds such as armpits, elbows, knees, neck, etc. I went to a dermatologist, and was told I have pregnancy induced eczema.
I'm just wondering is this a common pregnancy complication with hyperemesis? Has anyone else had this problem. Or is it just coincidence that it happened the same time. (ps. I asked my doctor and he only said it mighg be a liver problem, did a blood test, and said that everything came back normal.)

I've had allergies since I was young, and then diagnosed with eczema as well when I was about 14. So I've had it on and off my whole life, and let me tell you, pregnancy makes it soooo much worse. With my first baby, I had milder HG, but my eczema was so bad sometimes that I couldn't go out in public. I have better medicine these days, so the battle with eczema wasn't as severe. However, I could never get it to go away completely. I use a topical steroid, but very sparingly when I was pg with Kathleen. I hope you feel better soon, because HG is bad enough without eczema too. Make sure you get some treatment for it, but in the meantime, oatmeal baths are really great for the itch. I don't know if Aveeno products are available where you are, but those were the best I'd found. :)

well the oatmeal bath option is out since I don't own a bathtub, but I will try to look into the aveeno products. Thanks.

I've had patches of eczema my whole life and it mostly occurs in the winter months (same for my daughter). I've been able to stay on top of it with OCT lotions and creams designed for eczema. For my daughter we have a Rx cream we use on her patches.

As far as it being common with HG, I don't know. I do know its common in pregnancy. Did the dr suggest that it could be PUPPS? That is the most common itchy rash associated with pregnancy.

No one ever mentioned to me the rash you just mentioned. I actually just got back from a dermatologist (another one this time) who she also agreed that it was eczema. She said that she has never heard of hyperemesis causing eczema, but that the dehydration can irritate the eczema and make it worse.

Google PUPPs and see if its similar to what you have. And yeah, I could see how dehydration could worsen eczema.

I looked up pupps and I am almost postive it isn't that. No rash in the stomach area, mine started in the first trimester, and there are no spots in my rash.
