HG and Preeclampsia

Postby mo0105 » Nov 06, 2009 5:21 pm

I just wanted to post to see how many people had HG and preeclampsia. I've read some things on the preeclampsia website that vitamin deficiency in early pregnancy may be linked to pre-e but I can't find anymore about it. So I thought I would just post and ask. I had HG and then was diagnosed with pre-e at week 35 and was induced. Luckily I had a healthy baby girl, she did spend some time in the NICU but is fine now. Any insight or stories are welcome. Thanks!

This is interesting. Could you post the link for us? I'd like to read it as PreE will be discussed at our TTC appt over the winter.

I was on PreE *watch* my entire pregnancy. Perinatalogist started me on asprin therapy at 20 wks until 37 wks. I also had u/s with their office every 3 wks and then every week at 36 wks. At 36.5 wks, I started showing signs of PreE, swelling, headaches, and increasing high BP readings. I did 2 more 24 hr urine collections between 36 and 38 wks. As the days progressed I was spilling more and more protein in my urine. At 38 wks my BP reading and blood work came back positive for PreE and I was induced that evening. The Ob said "not going to let you go home and have a seizure over the weekend"

Need to add though, that I have had hypertension for the last 10 years, thus the reason my drs were concerned about PreE. Add to that, HG prevented me from keeping BP meds down. :verygreen:

Another case of HG, and then Pre-E/Class I HELLP with delivery at 34 weeks. Interesting hypothesis.

I had gestational hypertension and borderline pre-e. Pre-e started at 25 weeks, was almost induced at 26 wks, but managed to make it to 40 wks before I was induced b/c of it.

http://www.preeclampsia.org/FAQ.asp#six

Here is the link. It is under "What causes Preeclampsia?"... it lists calcium deficiency, poor diet, B6 deficiency etc. It just perked my interest because I never had any issues at all with BP, the opposite actually; I have a very low BP usually and very low resting heart rate. I am a runner. The doctors couldn't believe I got Pre-e and I actually had no symptoms other than the rapid weight gain and swelling... no headaches etc. My blood work was horrible though, lots of protein in my urine and the nurse kept commenting on how they couldn't believe I didn't feel bad. I was going to have a c-section immediately if I wasn't dilated... luckily I was dilated to a 1 so they let me try. I was able to have her naturally. Anyway long story but I've been really concerned about getting Pre-e again with my next pregnancy so I'm just trying to see if there would be any relationship between HG and Pre-e. Let me know how your appt goes. I will also be visiting with my doc about it in Jan.[/img]

Thank you so much for the PreE article. Definitely going to print it out for the Ob when we chat later.

I've been pregnant 9 times. 8 children (and one in the oven). HG three times (waiting to see on this one) and two of those three times I had BP issues. Full on pre-elclampsia with #7, kidney's shutting down, on mag etc.... PIH with the next one. Delivered at 37weeks before it turned into pre-e although there is no doubt had that pregnancy continued even a few more days it would have been pre-e.
i'm expecting PIH at the least this time. Hoping to make it to 38 weeks this time. my 37 weeker had a rough time.

karen-- well you give me hope I won't have HG EVERY pregnancy! So did you have any pre-e issues with the other pg were you didn't have HG? I just can't believe there isn't some correlation between the two. I'm not saying it causes it but maybe just helps it along you know.

I had HG both pregnancies. With my first it was not as severe and was able to be managed with oral medications. I had pre-eclampsia with that pregnancy, but it didn't come on until late in the pregnancy. I didn't end up needing to be induced until 39 weeks.

My second pregnancy the HG was significantly worse, but I had no signs of pre-eclampsia.

I didn't have pre-e, and my blood pressure was always too low. They did, however, have me on a "pre-e watch" because, if my blood pressure was too long for awhile, it could shoot sky-high quickly and be very harmful for me and the baby. I wasn't on meds for it; my blood pressure was simply watched quite carefully (like most pg women, I am sure). I do not have typically high pressure (actually it is normally textbook 120/80), but I do have a family history of heart issues and high pressure.

In reference to that article, that is an interesting hypothesis. As soon as I got pg (within the first 5 weeks, I believe), I had started B6 and half a Unisom to curb the "morning sickness." So I am not sure what would happen if I hadn't. But I was not on calcium or anything like that, so I don't know.

I suffered with horrific HG! I developed as serious case of pre-eclampsia 3 days after baby was born by emergency C-section. I was ready to leave the hopspital when my BP spiked and my weight went from 95lbs prior to birth- to a whopping 129lbs 2 days post partum from fluid retention.

I had preclampsia my last month and ended up with atypical HELLP in the hospital after my son was born.

preeclampsia and HG

Postby midmama » Oct 09, 2011 10:56 pm

i had preeclampsia with my 1st pregnancy.labor was induced only about a week or 2 before original due date. my baby girl had jaundice and was quite small , just under 5lbs! but , otherwise, quite healthy. i was in the hospital for another week b/c of high blood pressure. i did not have a central line (for tube feeding ), but i did for my 2nd pregnancy and did not have toxemia and my son had a bit higher birth weight -over 6 lbs! i now have 2 almost grown , beautiful children :)

I know this is an old post - but the Preclampsia Foundation just started a research study on PreE. Its being run similar to the HER genetic research study with submitting a saliva sample and survey with medical records. On my PreE survey I was sure to mention that I had the added stress of HG during pregnancy, because who knows if that had anything to do with why PreE happens.

Yep - Had HG and then Pre-E for the last 6 weeks of my first pregnancy. My midwife did a study of pre-e by a man named Dr. Brewer. He believed it is linked to protein deficiency. If I can find information I will link it. - Great question - Thanks for bringing this up.

I found this link as well as many others under Dr. Tom Brewer who is considered a Pre-e expert. If you can't eat (HG) you don't get the necessary nutrition to grow a baby. Pre-E is just one of the many side effects of hg - Hope this helps in some way.
