Weaning off Zofran pump...

Postby Alwayshappy39 » Apr 10, 2012 9:37 am

Hey ladies, I am starting to lower the dose on my Zofran pump and to say I am nervous is the understatement of the century! I am on day 4 and everytime I feel a second of nausea, I have a mini stroke. I guess it is the fear of going back to that dark horrible place I was from week 9 to week 15. (I am currently 20 weeks) I haven't vomited in 3 weeks so, I assume this is standard protocol. I really dont feel any worse since starting to lower my dose. I guess I am letting my HG nerves get the best of me! Is anyone else going through this now?

I had IV Zofran this pregnancy, but with my DD I had a pump until 20 weeks. I also slowly weaned off it. I was terrified, but lowering the dosage slowly every 3-4 days until it was at its lowest dose seemed to work for me. I turned it off at 20 weeks exactly when I was only getting 12mg/day through the pump. I was terrified, as it had become a security blanket of sorts for me, but I knew it was time to try and get off of it. I then switched to oral zofran as needed, but found I didn't need it much. This pregnancy I did the same thing weaning off the IV Zofran and I'm still taking oral Zofran as needed, but I'm functioning fairly normally again.(I threw up yesterday morning, but felt ok afterwards....having an empty stomach after sleeping at night is a big nausea/vomiting trigger for me). I hope it goes well for you too!

I just stopped my pump on Monday and I have been ok. I didn't want to do it but I knew I had to try. Even the weaning was scary to me and I thought I couldn't do it, but I did. It's definitely been my security blanket. I had it for over 3 months. You can do it. I still have my PICC line and I am nervous about getting it out, but I have to do it. Best of luck, we are all here if you need us. Please keep us updated.
Currently have PICC with fluids and zofran pump Ambien celexa zyprexa xanax senkot

Thank u for the encouragement! It is hard to explain the feelings/nervousness to people who haven't shared my experience. I know friends and family mean well but, I really needed to hear from other women who have walked in my shoes. I have had my pump for almost 12 weeks now and as much of a pain in the butt (or belly) it is, it has probably saved my life! I have decreased my dose again today and the only real symptom I have is a loss of appetite. Hopefully, this will be short lived. So, here's to us girls who have survived another day of this horrible illness... I keep u all in my prayers

Hi - I'm so with you! I'm starting to ween off the pump and I'm super nervous. Are you switching over to oral zofran or are you just trying to pull back completely? Keep us posted on your experience!

You ladies have no idea what a support you have been to me through this really tough pregnancy.... Thank you! As far as the weaning from the Zofran pump, it is going pretty well. In two more days I will be on the lowest dose. I will stay there for about 3 days and then I will disconnect. The doc called me in a script of oral ODT Zofran 8mg and I was told that I can take up to three a day if I need to. I am praying that I won't need to depend on them on a regular basis. So, I guess my worst symptom during the decrease have been my nerves. The "what if my body isn't ready and I get as sick as I was before the pump" That is my worst fear. But, I know I need to move past it and be grateful for the good days! On a positive note (sorry if it is TMI) Since day two of my pump decrease I have been able to poop without all of the interventions (miralax/enema, etc) Thank u for small miracles...

I can't stop laughing about your poop comment. Managing that whole thing has become the latest focus of most of my energy. Good grief HG, can you leave us no dignity???

I'm dying over the poop comments! I weaned down on zofran( oral pills) recently- my hg is "mild" I've discovered from being on here- Anyhoo poop, haha. I vomit more often with less zofran... Not daily but a few times a week and can't eat as much as I was able on the higher dosage... As long as I stay relatively stable, I've decided I prefer throwing up more to pooping feeling like giving birth
