Vitamins

Postby not a fan of hg » Aug 07, 2012 11:03 pm

I haven't been able to take vitamins and just this past week at 13 wks, I've started taking flintstone gummies for kids. I'm nervous that I didn't take folic acid or anything else during first tri. I'm going to start folic now but I'm sure the most crucial point of taking it has passed - 1st tri.

Thoughts?

Actually, IIRC, the most important time to take folic acid is before you're pg and something like the first 6 weeks? Someone correct me if I've got that wrong.

I have to stop taking prenatals by 5-6 weeks. With DD, I did try to take some kids chewables eventually. With DS, I didn't even try. My OBs were not concerned at all that I didn't take vitamins throughout my pg, which surprised me. Obviously, if you can take them with HG, it's overall better for you as baby is depeleting your stores.
DD1 7/22/05 HG 6-18 weeks
DS 6/17/09 HG 6 weeks-delivery at 37 weeks
DD2 2/25/13 HG 6 weeks-delivery at 38w5d

I asked the same question when I wasn't able to take any prenatals, and my mom made the point that prenatals are a relatively modern thing as far as humans go, and the human race has survived pretty well without them :) Plus, the reason you have been so sick is because the baby is taking everything it needs from you, so really you are the one suffering. If you can take them now, great! If not, don't worry about it :)

I agree with what everyone else has said so far. If it makes you feel any better I was not able to take any vitamins until recently and my baby boy is perfectly healthy according to my anatomy scan. I would highly recommend the gummy prenatals. They have no iron in them so they don't hurt your stomach, but unlike the flinstone ones they have all of the folic acid/dha for baby. Plus they taste really good...easy to get down...at least for me!

I asked my dr about this when I was 8 weeks. I said I was concerned as I wasn't able to take vitamins & folic acid. She said if you're taking it before you gt pregnant you should be fine.

Hi,

I was really worried too because I could not bear to take my vitamins. I would throw them up. My doctors told me not to worry about it and my 13 week scan showed a healthy baby.

What Brynn said is so true!!!! Most of our mothers and definitely our grandmothers wouldn't have taken prenatal vitamins and we are okay. Millions of babies around the world are born healthy from mothers who haven't taken vitamins too. Obviously, take them if you can, but if you can't don't get stressed about it. :)

I have just found some vitamins that don't make me sick! It is the Bellybar Prenatals + DHA (http://www.bellybarproducts.com/), and I got them at Babies R Us. Warning, these are **FOODMENT chocolate balls that kind of remind me of Milk Duds END FOODMENT**, so if you can't handle this particular taste at the moment steer clear. But if you can, they are worth a try. I take them right before bed and have had no side effects after 3 days of taking them. I think the key is that they have 100% of the iron you need in a day, not 150%, which is what a lot of the others seem to have. You can also just bite them in half if you don't want to take the full dose. Hope this helps!
