What foods are working/not working

Postby mom2matt » Jul 22, 2004 5:58 pm

I was curious to get opinions on what works and why and what dosnt:
My list is

Works:
Jello...room temp/cherry..its the same going/coming
Watermelon...room temp..its the same going/coming
applesause...cold..gets a little bitter on the way up..but tolerable

Not work:
Dairy..dont even ask...milk turns to cheese, cheese in to..ewwww
Poultry..lets be honest..it just comes up rancid
Breads/crackers..turn to starch burbs..then gagging starts

My rule of thumb..if it can sit for 12 hours in a hot sauna and not 'convert' to fuzz, or grow in size..its good to go.

Sno-cones worked well for me during the worst of this pg.
Last pg the only way I stayed hydrated was with watermelon...this time I can't handle it!

The interesting thing I've realized is that almost everything I could stomach during the last 3 pg was yellow or neutral color. Can't figure that one out.

good/bad foods

Postby LisaLove » Jul 26, 2004 4:49 pm

Foods that work (sometimes)
Watermelon (comes up terrible though)
Galia melons (comes up sweet and refreshing!)
Frozen grapes
San Pellegrino mineral water (lifesaver)
McDonald's french fries (the only thing I NEVER vomited)
milkshakes
popcorn
Gummi bear vitamins

Foods that haven't worked
Turkey (the WORST coming up)
toast (blah...chunky) - sorry - I almost throw up thinking about it
anything spicy
most fruits

Last pregnancy, I could handle carbohydrates. Waffles, tater tots, baked fries. This pregnancy, I can't handle much of anything.

Grapes always make me vomit.
Meat is awful coming up and ground beef HURTS.
Proteins and fats are harder to digest, and I have a harder time with them - so no milk, meat, eggs, etc.

Banana is ok and tastes the same coming back up.
Graham crackers are tolerable.
Baked fries on occasion.
Waffles would be ok if I hadn't burned out on them last time I had HG.

Things that work okay are: Propel flavored water (has to be cold), Pediapops (you know the kids flavored electrolite pops).
Things that don't stand a chance....milk or any soft dairy

I am a vegetarian so I have a tough time finding things to eat as my choices pre-HG are limited.

It seems that the only thing I've NEVER thrown back up was skim milk, which is a no-no on most lists.
Watermelon is a great way to feel like you're getting some "water" - but not too pleasant on the way back up.
Hamburger is just off the list completely - YUCK
Jello is awesome.
My favorite thing these days is ICE.... wow how nutritional and yummy.
Meat in general is off limits, although I've had some luck with steak lately
Mashed potatoes are good, pizza is bad
anything with sugar is bad

Into my 7 month I was given a steroid and YES! I am down to sick only in the mornings. When I first began to eat "REAL" food again. I had a chicken boston market sandwich. I remember thinking that was it all I would ever be able to eat. My husband came home late and we arrived in the drive through to be told they had closed 10 minutes earlier. I broke down crying my eyes out. " Oh God my stomach will get empty and I will get sick again what am I going to do." Looking back it is funny but then it was as if life ended.

Worst: Sauerkraut -- Green when it comes back up

food

Postby foxwoodfaerie » Nov 04, 2004 6:18 pm

My goods and bads change on a daily, sometimes hourly basis. But, the few things I've been able to stick to are:
Otter Pops (the only way I stay hydrated)
Dr. Pepper
Del Taco chicken soft tacos. I don't know why, it doesn't make any sense but I've NEVER thrown them up. Good thing too cause they'd probably be pretty gross the second time around.

Pizza is BAD!
Candy/chocolate is bad.
water is a definite no no, can't even use it to rinse my mouth out after puking.
Garlic is the most evil thing on the planet.
grape juice burns your nose coming back.

Works:
Mashed potato, salt & vinegar chips, coke, frozen lemonade, plain crispbread, plain white rice, apple cranberry juice. (all depending on the moment of course!)

Doesn't work:
Hot chips or anything fatty/greasy
Chicken soup
Water (straight down and straight up again)
Chocolate
Ginger biscuits
Meat anything (esp the smell)

1st Pregnancy-

Almost everything came up...

He was a July baby so the watermelon stayed down but milk did not... ironically, even though milk would not stay down... Cheese was the magic food and MC Donald's Caramel Nut Sundaes....

The biggest No No and disaster for our poor walls was purple grape juice

2nd-Pregnancy
Nothing was tolerable until month 8....
After that--I had this one week where Hoagies and Chocolate entemann's donuts were a must have.... My doctor laughed because for all the weight I had lost, I gained 20 lbs in 1 week. After that point, several foods became tolerable but still a big "no" to milk

Good vs. Bad

Postby adelmaal » Jan 03, 2005 6:34 pm

Yes To (yummy going down and not bad coming back up):
Red Slurpees
Jello
Red Kool-Aid
Popsicles
French Fries
Jamba Juice
Believe it or not an occasional bean and cheese burrito (no sauce)

No To:
Dairy (great going down; horrible coming back up)
Pasta (try gagging and throwing up at the same time)
Meat
Pizza (need I say nausea and heartburn all at the same time)
Any kind of fruit juice that wasn't fake such as kool-aid came right back up and tasted rancid

i can't eat anything

Postby Hollie » Jan 11, 2005 2:31 pm

I am 12 weeks pg and everytime i try to eat the smell of food makes me sick. I tried eating an apple and it came up. And that was gross. I even throw up water but i try new things everyday to see what well work and what won't. Gum seems to help settle my stomach, but other than that i can't eat anything.

This might sound crazy, but one thing I can't get enough of of is salad with Italian dressing. You would think it would be killing me, but my mouth is actually watering right now thinking of it!

evil things:
water
bread - slow coming back, but guaranteed to show up at some stage
fruit - instant bounce
raw vegies
overcooked vegies
tomatoes
dairy - although small amounts okay in the third tri
jello, jelly beans, jelly babies, .........
hot drinks of any variety (no thankyou, :P peppermint tea will NOT fix this)
crackers (ESPECIALLY first thing in the morning  )
the smell of cooking meat
vegemite (especially on crackers or dry toast.......)
tinned soup or the soups in the plastic cups that you microwave
anything that you eat three nights in a row because it worked yesterday
herbal remedies (disolving the horse sized pills in water does NOT help!!!)
one mouthful too many of anything at all

good stuff:
ice - very good for turning around the dehydration. Bought a snow-cone machine for next time.
flat ginger beer - if it was made with real ginger
ultra dry meusli bars
anzac biscuits
rye crispbreads
small scones - pumpkin ones were good for breakfast for a while
most meats, as long as I didn't smell it cooking
potato - I have a great recipe for a dairy free gratin that I could get someone to cook and then eat little bits of straight out of the fridge in the middle of the night
pasta
home made vegetable soup (strange paradox with the hot drink thing)
chocolate
cold milo in the evenings (this is a bit like ovaltine)
Mcdonalds hash browns

small amounts of the "good" foods immediately after a one-mouthful-too-many vomit always seemed to help.

good luck to all

oh, and I meant to also mention banana paddle pops and frozen yoghurt were good for a little while....

...and the other thing was that I had a cousin who couldn't eat anything in her first trimester unless she sat on a chair holding her nose and keeping her eyes shut while her husband sat behind her and reached around her to spoon the food into her mouth....

cheers
