Caffine Intake in pregnancy

Postby Atsie » Nov 09, 2006 4:21 pm

Here is info from an article I was reading regarding caffine intake. This info is from the magazine Today's Parent, Pregnancy and Birth.

According to Health Canada preganant women should limit their caffine intake to less than 300 mg a day.

The following is a list of the approximate caffine content of drinks.

Brewed Coffee
grande, large or 16 oz 270 mg caffine
tall, medium or 12 oz 203 mg
regular or 8 oz 135 mg

Energy Drinks*
16 oz monster can 160 mg
11.9 oz can 120 mg
8.3 oz can 80 mg

Tea
8 oz 42 mg

Cola Drinks
1 can/ 355ml/12 oz 42 mg

*Keep in mind these drinks can get the energy boost from herbs such as guarana or yerba mate which act like caffeine. But you wont see caffeine on the label unless they add pure caffeine.

Now keep in mind, if it worked, I drank it. I just found that seeing the numbers really helped. That is about 7 cans of pop!

Hope that helps.

That's good info to have. Good to see my cola drinks so low on the list  . Thanks for posting this.

Do frappucinos count as Brewed Coffee? That was the only caffiene intake during either of my pregnancies - I craved them horribly at the end of my second when HG slowed down.

I don't know. I looked at Starbucks but they don't list how much caffeine is in thier drinks. I was hooked on the ice caps for awhile with this pg. I imgaine this baby is going to be jonesing for caffeine at birth!

Hmmm, I don't know about anyone else, but if caffeine is the only drink I can tolerate then I'll drink as much as I can, surely too much caffeine is better than no fluids at all?

Besides, we are not "normal" pregnant women..LOL

I wanted to post those numbers since often times women think one can of pop is too much. But that is over 6 cans of pop a day! So I thought it would help other Moms feel good that when they do drink caffeine it isn't the end of the world. We all know to drink what works.

And I all i drank was caffinated pop.... Cameron should have a Pepsi logo on her forhead!

that is good info to know! I had a soda 4 weeks ago and it really made me feel better for a time - it's the only one I had though because I was afraid the caffeine would hurt the baby. now i think I'll go drink one today :)

Thought I’d add this since Starbucks had it on their website…

Caffeine in a Café Mocha:

Size / mg caffeine

Short (8 oz) 90 mg
Tall (12 oz) 95 mg
Grande (16 oz) 175 mg
Venti (20oz) 180mg

Shot of Espresso 75 mg

Someone mentioned a Frappucino: and those have LESS caffeine than the Mocha did. Here’s the website:

One a day keeps the doctor away

Postby Highbeck1 » Mar 15, 2012 2:26 pm

This is my fourth pregnancy...I have never been on the forums because once the hg hits I can't stand the flickering of the computer screen with out vomiting. My doctor said she had never seen a case of hg as bad as my last pregnancy. I am only six weeks along and by God's grace seem to be feeling the best of all my pregnancies.. I was interested in this thread because the best thing I have done this pregnancy is drink a cup of coffee first thing in the morning. Usually I have a strong oversion to coffee when pregnant but I haven't yet...and the miracle is how it settles my stomach! I got to thinking about it today and the only thing I can describe it as, is comparing it to someone with ADHD. Someone with ADHD takes medications that are stimulants which seems contrary to what you would think...that a stimulant would throw you into overdrive. For me, when pregnant, my stomach feels like it is quivering and nothing feels like it digests, coffee makes it feel like it is starting to function normally again! I know what works for one person may not work for someone else, but if it helps just one person, it is worth posting! Good luck friends, this too shall end!

@ highbeck
Funny, I did the very same thing just weeks ago. That one coffee in the morning helped a lot against the nausea. I don't know if it had helped in later stages of the pregnancy though, as I miscarried at 10 weeks. But it does give hope for a (hopefully) future pregnancy.

When I was at the hospital in my previous two pregnancies and not able to hold much food down, the doctors advised me to drink coke, because of the sugar rate. So I'm guessing that at times it's superior to get sugar into your system than worry about coffein...

So happy to see this post... I am drinking a glass of Coke as I read it. :)

Coke is one of the only drinks I have been able to enjoy/keep down throughout the HG. I especially love it in Slurpee form.

During pregnancy, not only caffeine should be limited as it will affect the baby's development. Pregnant women should at least sacrifice for their child, though it will be only for at most 9 months.

I have actually found that two cups of coffee in the morning help me NOT throw-up. I didn't have any with my first pregnancy (Moderate HG) , some with my second (moderate HG) and this one (I'm 31 weeks) after the first trimester I have been having one or two cups in the morning. But I also drink a lot of water too....

I was concerned as when I could keep liquids down it was coke and lucozade, which have quite high caffeine contents, and I was being tutted at by people, including some physios. Every obstetrician I've seen says it's much better to drink these caffeinated drinks than nothing at all as the dehydration and starvation is far more dangerous.
