Question about Unisom and Vit B6??

Postby Bethers » Sep 30, 2005 8:18 pm

What does this combination do for a person and when do you usually take it? My dr said you take it usually at night as it helps you sleep and lessens the nausea the following dayy? Anyone find this to work? And do you take both together??

I take them together...25 mg/unisom3x/day (generic name doxylamine succinate) and 100 mg/B6 2xday. I take them throughout the day and it's stops the puking...usually it stops the nausea, but for me, it stops the puking. The sleepy thing wears off after a week or two...but those first two weeks, yikes, sleep city.

B6 calmed my stomach. I took 200 mg/day back when that was still ok (now 150 mg is recommended, though 200 is ok for limited time--check with Motherisk for latest dosing info), and I could feel my stomach "smoothing out" after I took it. I took it 2x a day with my other meds. The Unisom I took throughout the day as needed--1/2 tab at a time, and I never had any issues with sleepiness. I stopped Unisom at 7 weeks when I ended up in for a rehydration and major med re-shuffling, but I went back on it again when I weaned off Meclizine at 25 weeks and was popping my little blue friends through to the end.

Pamela,

The maximum dose for B6 has been reduced again? I thought 250 mg was the max. Yikes. No wonder I had neurological problems after Chris was born as I was taking probably 300 mg/day for 30 weeks without the doctors ever saying anything.... Impressive care I got then.

I believe that now they say 200 is max? and 150 is better? I think we've been recommending 150 here for awhile now, though I did 200 and would have been way too lazy to split a pill! :P Let me look and see.....

OK-- "And when taking [B6] supplements, even long-term daily doses up to 100 mg are safe. However, in rare cases, taking 200 to 300 mg daily over time has resulted in nerve damage and associated numbness, weakness, and loss of function in the extremities. This serious consequence is more likely to occur when doses of more than 2,000 mg are consumed daily for lengthy periods (two months or more)." This is the research current dosage is based on, and it appears pretty safe to do 200 or 250 or even 300 during pregnancy. Can you imagine 2,000 mg/day? Yikes! That's a lot of bitter little pills!

My goodness, I need to amend my advice on this all over the boards. I've been saying 250 mg was the max...the old data. Yikes.
