hello, i am new on this website and its been about 4 years since i have had hg, but i have a question. after delivering, i wanted to have my tubes tied because i swore i would never be sick like this again. my obgyn had told me that since i had completed a full cycle of pregnancy, this would not happen again and not to go ahead with this procedure. so i went on ortho trycycline{the pill} and also breastfeed for 1and1/2 years with no problem. then i was having a root canal, on antibiotics and the pill failed. i new by 5weeks that i was once again pregnant, but this time around i was worse. there was no physical way to take care of a child who was a year old and we had also won custody of my husbands son age 5 at the time. so anyhow, i ended up terminating my pregnancy, and my husband has since then had a vicectimy. i would relly love to know if this is just theory that the second time around is supposed to be better, and please give me some general answers of how i hg and knowone in my family has e ver expierenced this. thank you for your time. im glad girls with this disorder have a site like this to learn about hg. it is such a rare situation but it is a situation that tends to almost always leads to healthy babies. erica

Hi,

I have just read your message and thought i wouls send a quick reply.
I had this in my first pregnancy and wasa dmitted to hospital twice during it.
5 1/2 years later i had my second child, this time i was in hospital on drips a total of nine times!!!!!!!1
I had to move in with my parents so my eldest could go to a school near them and they could look after us.
I continued being sick until the day she was born.

Hello,
I just read your message and have to say that I have been pregnant 9 times and now have three children. Every one of the pregnancies was plagued by HG. The symptoms would stop when my body finally was so dehydrated and I miscarried the pregnancy or at approximately 24-48 hours after delivery. The three pregnancies that I was able to carry to term were absolutely the worst time in my life but my last pregnancy (2002) was the worst. I did find some help from a GI specialist in my area. We tried the traditional Zofran, Reglan and Zantac. First, by mouth and shortly thereafter IV. Neither of these options worked. In the end, I had a 105 degree temp and a staph infection in a midline that had been placed. With very few options available, my GI specialist found a surgeon in my area that was willing to place a J-tube at three months pregnant. This turned into a 2 week hospital stay. I began a continuous feed regimen with a portable pump that I had over my shoulder until 3 days prior to delivery. At that point, I was 1 pound over my pre-pregnant weight and still receiving Zantac, Reglan and Zofran IV. My baby weighed 6 lbs at birth and is perfectly healthy. When I reflect on it all now, I can see that a little bit of progress has been made since 1986 when I delivered my first son. At that time, I was not given any options for help, Just told that the "morning sickness" would pass..............so I waited and waited and waited.

I agree that it's wishful thinking that the "second time is better". I'm just about finishing the first trimester of my second pregnancy and, even with new constant medication with Zofran I'm nauseated and vomiting. While it is "better," this is a relative term! While it's true that I haven't lost as much weight as I had at this point in my first pregnancy and I haven't been hospitalized, I still find it very difficult to carry out normal life. There's no doubt that strides have been made in treating HG, but as far as I can see there's no magic bullet, unfortunately.

Hello. I just found this website and am so grateful. I have an 18 month old and am now 6 weeks pregnant. The HG started again this week and has progressed everyday. I was hoping this Q and A would have some responses from Healthcare Professionals. Are any of you out there reading these? I live in a small town and do not think there are any doctors experienced with HG here. I do not know where to go if my doctor does not take me seriously (my first doctor didn't).

Gracies Mom,
If your Dr. does not take you serious go to the ER if you are not ok, also find a bigger hospital even if it is a drive, it will make all the difference. There are alot of tools on this site that will help you and alot of support form women who have been in your shoes. What state do you live in? perhaps there is a referral here or someone else is in or near your state/town. HG is real and Dr.'s need to know/learn that. If he/she doesnt believe you someone else will. Best of luck to you.

According to the research studies out there, you have more than a 50/50 chance of having HG again. In our experience here at the foundation, the marjority of women with true HG, especially severe HG, will have it every time. Those that don't might have had it less severely or just morning sickness if they had early, effective care the first time around!

Thank you to Lori for her response to my post and to Kimber and Ann Marie. As it turns out, the doctor I chose on the referral page is the same as Ann Maries' and he has accepted me as a new patient. I will be traveling to Baylor (Dallas) to see Dr. Gunby. I had my first visit already. They were so fast to get me in and Dr. Gunby spent a lot of time talking with me. I have already started zofran and reglan treatments and am a little better. I still throw up, but if I stick to clear liqiuds, it's not as violent.
Thanks!
